Spotlight: Matt Demetriou

For our August spotlight, the D&I Board spoke with Matt Demetriou who is a Billing and Collections Team Lead II at our corporate headquarters in Columbia, Maryland. The board asked Matt to tell us about himself and his Amergis journey, including what accomplishments he is most proud of. He also shared some words of wisdom for new members joining the Amergis team.
Matt’s Amergis Healthcare Staffing Journey
I started with the company in May 2016 as a Reimbursement Specialist. I was referred to [Amergis] by my cousin, who was a Reimbursement Specialist. Hard to believe almost a decade can go by so quickly!
In Q2 of 2018, I joined the “Billing and Collections – Training Department” (This was technically a homecare position). The training department had typically worked on training homecare Reimbursement Specialists, and I was brought in to help bring some staffing knowledge to the program. In 2019 I re-joined the Staffing billing team as a Reimbursement Specialist II, and in 2020 during the thick of the pandemic, I became a Reimbursement Specialist III. Due to the growth of the company during that time, more leadership positions became available, and in Q1 of 2021, I was promoted to Team Lead I, and in Q3 of 2022, I became Team Lead II, and here we are today!
Day to day, there is always something new happening, that is what keeps work exciting! Our job in the Billing and Collections Department is to make sure we help keep the lights on! We are typically working on the accounts/regions we have been assigned and making sure things are running smoothly with the clients that we service. Submitting invoices, performing collection attempts on those invoices, completing billing adjustments, and making sure the payments for those invoices are applied correctly. Because of where our department is in the Revenue Cycle, we collaborate with a lot of different departments and people, so there is always some sort of meeting on the calendar (department/company updates, client meetings, internal discussions, team meetings with my direct reports – to name a few examples). Communication is key to success!
I think I’m most proud to just be here and be in a position where I feel my feedback is heard and considered when decisions are being made. Before I started with [Amergis], I did not have much experience in a corporate environment and no experience in billing and collections. My hiring managers (Hope Kimbrough and Janet Larche – shout out to them!) took a chance on me, and I am grateful for the opportunity they gave me! I told them they would get 110% effort out of me, and I feel I have exceeded that commitment by working my way through the banding and earning the respect of my colleagues.
One thing most people might not know is that I am a vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian for almost 12 years now! The day that marked my journey was Thanksgiving 2011. I figured that if I could go Thanksgiving without Turkey, the rest should be easy!
Words of wisdom for our new hires/interns: ask questions – understand the why behind the task or process you are learning. When you understand the why, you have a greater perspective of what you need to accomplish, and it can help you think outside the box with problem solving to accomplish that goal.
