    About Women’s Equality Day

Every August 26, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the adoption of the nineteenth amendment, which gave women the right to vote nationally. This historic moment led to the creation of Women’s Equality Day in 1972, with Congress officially recognizing the observance in 1973. In addition to remembering these achievements, Women’s Equality Day also focuses on underscoring the importance of continued advocacy for true gender equality.

To honor Women’s Equality Day, our D&I team with Sarah Montgomery, a director of delivery operation, to learn about her vital role in our Women in Leadership EAG and what it means being an active champion for diversity and inclusion.

    Sarah’s Journey & Impact

Can you tell us more about your role, what you do, and how you joined Amergis?

After earning my degree from Duquesne University, I began my professional journey as a first-grade teacher with Pittsburgh Public Schools. When my school unexpectedly closed, I transitioned into day-to-day substitute teaching—a challenging experience. Through prayer and thoughtful conversations with my family and now husband, I felt called to explore new opportunities, which led me to a role at Amergis (then Maxim). In October 2011, I started as a National Accounts Recruitment Specialist, placing administrative and allied professionals across the country. Within a year, I advanced to Senior Recruitment Specialist, then Account Manager, and ultimately Director of Business Operations in August 2015. In that role, I led a team of offshore recruiters and later built an onsite team from the ground up. Today, I serve as the Director of Delivery Operations, overseeing our OH-PA recruitment hub. In this role, I collaborate daily with our seven amazing offices – Pittsburgh, Philly, Harrisburg, Reading, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland – and our incredible Recruitment Operations Manager and National Recruitment Manager team members to meet our clients’ needs. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built and the impact we make in our communities and in each other’s lives.

What inspired you to pursue leadership roles at Amergis?

Early in my career, I realized I wanted to do more than recruit. I was fueled, in part, by those who didn’t immediately believe in my ability as a recruiter. But I was confident in my hustle, grit, and perseverance to take on any challenge and learn our industry. I was driven to lead, to advocate for my peers, and to help shape the direction of our office and organization. I welcomed the challenges and long hours, embraced change, and believed in what we could accomplish together. That mindset has guided me throughout my journey and continues to fuel my passion for leadership and impact.

What does it mean to you to have a seat at the table, and how do you use your voice when you’re there?

Being in a leadership role is a privilege—and with that privilege comes the responsibility to be a voice for our people. I believe it’s essential for leaders to advocate for their teams, ask the tough questions, submit your Opportunities for Improvement (OFIs), and challenge policies or practices that are questionable. I’m never afraid to raise my hand, seek clarity, or push for change when it’s needed. Over the past 14 years, I’ve witnessed incredible growth within this company—much of it driven by individuals who spoke up for what mattered. I’m proud to be part of that momentum and to contribute to a culture where thoughtful, courageous voices can make a real difference.

How has your leadership role at Amergis differed from past experiences?

Whether in the classroom as a teacher or in the office as a director, my focus has always been the same: people. I truly believe there’s no real difference between leading students and leading professionals—both require empathy, support, and a commitment to helping others reach their goals. As a leader, it’s both my responsibility and privilege to create an environment where individuals can grow, thrive, and pursue their dreams. We only get one life, and I believe it’s part of my purpose to help those around me find joy and fulfillment in the work they do.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned or piece of advice that you hope to pass on to the next generation of female leaders?

It’s hard to pinpoint just one lesson or piece of advice, so I’ll share a few. To the next generation of female leaders: Lead with integrity. Be proud of your voice and use it. Don’t underestimate your ability to succeed. Remember that you are capable and unique, bringing a valuable perspective to the table. Through the many chapters of life – engagements, wedding, and babies – know that you will get through the sleepless nights and the sick days with little ones. You can tackle it all. Speak up. Ask questions. Always seek out a diverse perspective. Be a voice not only for yourself, but for your team. And most importantly – give back. Invest in your peers, advocate for what’s right, and always pay it forward.

We want to thank Sarah for her leadership, voice, and unwavering commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Her drive to create inclusive spaces and meaningful changes makes her a standout leader and a powerful example of progress in action!
