At Amergis Healthcare Staffing, our team members are at the heart of everything we do. Each month, our Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) board highlights the story of Amergis employees who demonstrate our core values for healthcare professionals and their patients.

On the first Tuesday in June every year, we celebrate National Recruiter Recognition Day to honor the people who power our workforce. Recruiters are the heartbeat that makes us go! Beyond connecting talent with opportunity, they help shape the future of the organizations we staff. Their ability to spot potential, build relationships, and guide candidates through life-changing career moves makes a lasting impact every single day. Today, we honor their dedication, passion, and the incredible value they bring to our team and the clients we serve. As part of this celebration, the D&I team spoke with several of our recruiters to hear about their experiences at Amergis.

    Sydney Stanuch

    Recruiter II

How did you get started in recruiting, what attracted you to the field? How did you end up at Amergis?

My major was Health and Human Physiology in college. I knew I always wanted to work within healthcare but never wanted to be in a direct clinical role. When I was presented with the opportunity for healthcare recruiting, I thought it was the perfect fit to still be involved within the healthcare space and still be able to make a direct impact with those around me.

What do you enjoy most about recruiting, and how does it align with your career goals or personal values?

I wanted to work directly with people and really feel a team collaboration in the work I do. One of the things I love most about recruiting is the relationships I have been able to make and continue to build over the years. My longest and best workers are the ones that feel like true friendships.

What’s your favorite success story from your career as a recruiter?

One success story that always comes to mind is when our team had a client that was ready to give up on working with us and told us he would use other agencies. We had bad timing with two caregivers in the same department calling off, and it left our client extremely short-staffed and under a lot of stress and pressure. I was able to locate a candidate who was ready to start within the next week for a shift that is generally harder to fill. This helped mend the relationship and now that caregiver is going on his third extension! Our client also has referred us to other sites within the hospital system, and it has helped us break into several new departments and locations we didn’t have people working for before. Now this account is one of our largest for our team and we consistently see needs come to us first.

What advice would you give to someone looking to succeed in the recruiting field?

I would say to take full advantage of all the opportunities around you and be confident in what you are doing. There are so many positions open and available that we are able to work on. Take full advantage of all the features we have with PowerBI and RecruitCare, including new features to come. Organinzation and consistency in managing pipelines and utilizing referrals from those you have strong relationships with will lead to the opportunity and success.

What does recruiter recognition mean to you?

The recruiter recognition has been really rewarding. Over the past few years there have been a lot of highs, but also a lot of lows in recruiting. There are some days that can feel really discouraging, but I have had the opportunity to work closely with a lot of great people and definitely wouldn’t have been able to succeed in the ways I have without them. I feel grateful to have a team that celebrates all wins and never lets the hard work go unrecognized.

    National Recruitment Manager II

How did you get started in recruiting, what attracted you to the field? How did you end up at Amergis?

I never expected to go into recruiting, but I’ve always had a strong connection to healthcare—my mom’s a nurse and much of my family is in the field. When my grandparents were in a nursing home, the compassion of the caregivers really stuck with me. While job hunting, I came across Amergis and was drawn to how closely their values aligned with mine, so I applied!

What do you enjoy most about recruiting, and how does it align with your career goals or personal values?

What I enjoy most about recruiting is seeing the growth of the CNAs I work with—some have gone on to become LPNs and RNs, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of that journey. Hearing how Amergis has helped people advance their careers, fund their education, or start fresh in a new place really resonates with me. It aligns with my values because I saw firsthand the compassion my grandparents received in long-term care, and my goal is to help staff professionals who will provide that same level of care and treat patients like family.

What’s your favorite success story from your career as a recruiter?

There have been so many meaningful wins throughout my recruiting career. I’ve seen CNAs grow into RNs, helped healthcare professionals ease back into the field after life transitions, filled urgent staffing needs during critical times, and even supported travelers who ended up relocating permanently because they fell in love with a new place. Each of these moments reminds me why I love what I do—being part of someone’s journey and helping them succeed is incredibly fulfilling.

What advice would you give to someone looking to succeed in the recruiting field?

You really get out of this role what you put into it. Early on, it’s important to be willing to put in the extra time and effort to build your foundation. If you become complacent, it will reflect your results—like a dip in your spread or roster. Success in recruiting takes consistency, drive, and the ability to stay focused even on the tough days.

What does recruiter recognition mean to you?

To me, recruiter recognition is about more than just numbers—it’s about being acknowledged for the impact we make on people’s lives. Whether it’s helping someone land their first healthcare job, supporting a professional through a career transition, or filling a critical staffing need, every placement matters. Recognition is a reminder that the hard work, long hours, and dedication to both clients and candidates are truly making a difference.

    Talent Acquisition Specialist

How did you get started in recruiting, what attracted you to the field? How did you end up at Amergis?

What sparked my initial interest in recruiting stemmed from a close college friend who was working as a recruiter and raved about the industry! She described it as exciting, rewarding, and fulfilling. Something that will definitely keep you on your toes! After learning more about the day-to-day responsibilities, I felt my outgoing personality, passion for helping others, and competitive spirit would make me a great fit, and I wanted to explore it further. Through networking, I met Melanie Shawber!  (Fast forward, she’s now my manager!) Melanie provided me with valuable insight into the staffing industry and what Amergis embodies. Luckily, the Cleveland, OH, office was in the process of hiring a new recruiter, and I was selected to go through the interview process. I then landed the role of National Recruitment Manager with the Revenue Cycle team! After a year as an NRM, I transitioned to the Talent Acquisition team! This felt like a full circle moment, as my day-to-day now involves educating applicants about Amergis and the recruiter role, just as Melanie once did for me!

What do you enjoy most about recruiting, and how does it align with your career goals or personal values?

What I enjoy most about recruiting is connecting with candidates. I’m fascinated by each candidate’s background and the path that led them to apply with Amergis.  Hearing about their career goals and aspirations is always inspiring.  As a Talent Aquisition Specialist, I recognize that I am often the first point of contact a candidate has with our company. I take pride in representing our values and culture, ensuring that every interaction reflects what we stand for!  My goal is to make candidates excited about the opportunity to join our organization and the work we do.  I believe the interview process is a mutual evaluation. I want to ensure the candidate is a great match for the position and our organization, but it’s equally important that they feel we are the right fit for their professional journey!

What’s your favorite success story from your career as a recruiter?

Two people immediately come to mind when I think of my favorite success story are Isaac Gonzalez and Monica Nguyen with our Locum Tenens team. I had the pleasure of reviewing Monica’s application and connecting with Isaac on LinkedIn, hoping that he would be open to learning more about our team! Both absolutely crushed their first interviews with me and received glowing feedback from the hiring managers! They were both quickly offered NRM positions. Fast forward a few months, I heard they were both excelling and even applying for Account Executive (AE) promotions. Seeing Monica and Isaac progress so fast into AE’s was incredibly exciting.  Now, I have the pleasure of working alongside them, helping them build and hire NRMS for their own teams – a true full-circle moment.  I finally got to meet them both in person at the national meeting! Watching their growth and success is a memory I’ll always cherish.

What advice would you give to someone looking to succeed in the recruiting field?

As a TA conducting many first-round interviews, this is a question I get a lot! My advice would be to prioritize building genuine and trustworthy relationships. This industry is all about people and your ability to connect them to job opportunities quickly! Second, stay consistent and persistent. Recruiting can be a rollercoaster, so maintain consistent effort and don’t get discouraged by setbacks. Finally, be resilient and embrace challenges. The staffing industry is competitive, so push yourself outside of your comfort zone! This is where you’ll learn and grow, both professionally and personally. Recruiting is constantly evolving, so staying updated on industry trends and new technologies will allow you to provide the best service to your candidates!

What does recruiter recognition mean to you?

To me, recruiter recognition is about acknowledging the important role we play in connecting candidates with job opportunities. We truly are the bridge between the two!  Recognition is about feeling seen and valued for the work we do! I take pride in my role as a recruiter, and being recognized motivates me to continue striving for excellence and to create a warm, welcoming, and positive experience for all candidates.

    David Chhing

    Recruiter II

How did you get started in recruiting, what attracted you to the field? How did you end up at Amergis?

I joined Amergis back in June 2021 during the Covid pandemic by fortunate timing and luck. At the time, I was working at Nike as a software engineer, however Nike among other companies was going through layoffs due to the pandemic. My wife had a friend who was working at Amergis [Maxim at the time] who started as a recruiter in homecare and then was quickly promoted to Business Development Manager (BDM). She said really great things about the company, growth potential, and how much she enjoyed recruitment. After chatting with her friend and learning more about the recruitment role, I decided to apply and had an informational interview with our current Director, Cole Barton, who was a BDM at the time. He really sold me on the company, work culture, and the growth opportunity so I applied. It was the best decision I made, and I’ve been here ever since!

What do you enjoy most about recruiting, and how does it align with your career goals or personal values?

I find recruitment very fulfilling, and I have the opportunity to work on new account breakers while also assisting individuals who I’ve built strong relationships with. Recruitment can certainly be tough at times and there’s always something changing in our company, or healthcare can go through industry changes too. However, I feel these ever-evolving changes are what makes the role interesting and very dynamic. I consider myself very competitive and I enjoy the competitiveness nature of recruitment not only against other recruiters in my department or region but competing against myself and striving to hit all new high personal benchmarks each quarter.

What’s your favorite success story from your career as a recruiter?

In the fall of 2022, I was promoted to Account Manager (AM) and was overseeing two of our largest hospital systems at the time. After working in the AM role for a year, I really missed recruitment and the opportunity to work directly with healthcare professionals, so I decided to pivot back into the role around November 2023. It was a big adjustment, especially since the market retracted and was not the same as when I started recruitment in 2021 during the covid pandemic. However, I was very determined and felt more equipped than ever to build my pipeline from scratch from all the invaluable experience I learned while in the AM role. I set a personal goal of going from $0 spread to $30k in 6 months. I was able to come very close to my goal and hit $29k by June and I felt very accomplished for hitting it in a short amount of time. I was able to consistently remain over 20K spread each week for the rest of the year which led to me hitting my second contest, going on the incentives trip, and being one of the nominees for recruiter of the year.

What advice would you give to someone looking to succeed in the recruiting field?

I know this saying may sound cliché but ‘Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.’  Recruitment is not an easy job, and it takes a ton of hard work, grit, and dedication to honing your craft to be successful. It can be very demanding and requires sacrifice, and you’ll often need to make decisions for yourself, so you’re doing things to set yourself apart from other recruiters. That includes becoming a subject matter expert or “SME” so you know everything there is to know about the different roles you’re recruiting for. This will allow you to have more engaging conversations or know how to overcome objections should they come up.

What does recruiter recognition mean to you?

It’s when our peers, manager/leadership, and especially our healthcare professionals recognize the sacrifice and hard work you’ve put in. It can be something as little as taking the extra time to send someone a nice message to show gratitude or praising someone for going above and beyond.
