Spotlight: Celebrating International Day of Friendship

At Amergis Healthcare Staffing, our team members are at the heart of everything we do. Each month, our Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) board highlights stories of Amergis employees who demonstrates our core values.

Every year in July, we honor International Day of Friendship. The celebration, first proclaimed in 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly, is held on July 30 with the idea that friendship between people, countries, and cultures can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. To commemorate the spirit of friendship, we are spotlighting a remarkable bond that began in the most unexpected of places – daycare! Summer Interns, Merium and Mya, met as babies and have been inseparable ever since. Their friendship has grown alongside them, evolving through every stage of life – from childhood playdates to now, the early chapters of their professional journeys. The D&I team asked Merium and Mya to reflect on their friendship and what makes their bond special.

Merium & Mya’s Friendship

Both attend the University of Maryland, College Park, where their friendship deepened through shared experiences and mutual support. Merium, now in her third year as an intern with Amergis, has always been a steady source of encouragement for Mya. When Mya was exploring internship opportunities, it was Merium who nudged her to apply here, describing the culture and community as something truly special. “You’d be crazy not to apply,” she told her. And she was right—just a month in, Mya already feels at home.

Despite being polar opposites—Mya the creative spirit, Merium the analytical thinker—they complement each other perfectly. Mya speaks up for Merium when needed, while Merium helps keep Mya grounded during chaotic moments. The real glue that holds them together is their shared drive to succeed, and that’s how Merium knew Mya would thrive at Amergis.

Their friendship is woven into the fabric of their workdays. On Wednesdays, when their schedules overlap, Mya often pops by Merium’s desk, they try to grab lunch together and always make intentional efforts to stay connected. It’s these small rituals that keep their bond strong, even in the midst of busy days of internship.

In college and in life, we are constantly asked, “Where do you hope to be in five years?” However, we thought we would ask Merium and Mya, “Where do you hope to see you’re your friendship in five years?” Looking ahead, they envision a future where their friendship continues to thrive. Whether they’re starting their careers, exploring new paths, or even looking for apartments near each other, one thing is certain: “The bond is forever.” They dream of remaking the below photo with their “Moving Up Certificates” when they receive their college diplomas, a full-circle moment that captures just how far they’ve come—together.

Merium and Mya’s story is a beautiful reminder that friendship is about showing up, lifting each other up, and growing together. We thank Merium for bringing Mya to Amergis and we celebrate connections like theirs that make our Amergis culture and community even stronger.
