Independence Day Spotlight: Veteran Bryan Moyer
At Amergis Healthcare Staffing, our team members are at the heart of everything we do. Each month, our Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) board highlights the story of an Amergis employee who demonstrates our core values for healthcare professionals and their patients.
Independence Day is celebrated every year on July 4th, commemorating the passage of the United States Declaration of Independence. For veterans, Independence Day holds immense significance as it symbolizes the hard-fought freedom they defended and the sacrifices they have made. To learn more about his experience as a United States Marine Corps Veteran and his thoughts on Independence Day, the D&I and Communications teams spoke with Director of Business Operations (DBO) Bryan Moyer.
Bryan’s Path at Amergis
Bryan Moyer is currently a DBO, operating out of the Houston, TX field office. Bryan shared that as a DBO, his number one priority is to be a pillar of support for those in his office, whether it be a Business Development Manager, Recruiter, or anyone else he interacts with.
Before taking on the role of DBO, Bryan held numerous other positions at Amergis [previously Maxim]. He started off as a National Recruitment Manager for Maxim Physician Resources, and worked up the pipeline to Recruiting Manager, Account Manager, and Account Executive before switching over to the staffing side and taking on the DBO role. With a wife and two small children, along with a desire to be closer to family in Houston, Bryan’s transition to staffing made perfect sense. He also saw this transition as an opportunity to bet on himself and succeed in a different environment with unique systems, processes, and regulations.
For Bryan, his favorite aspect about working at Amergis is undoubtedly the people! He has friends all over the country, many of whom he met through Amergis. Recently, he had the opportunity to meet some other DBOs in person during a Director Readiness Training at our headquarters office. Now, they have a group chat where they can check in and exchange ideas with each other on a regular basis. He said that meeting them for the first time and being able to become friends so quickly shows the quality of the people at Amergis. Bryan acknowledges that though it may sound cliché, Amergis feels like a “family outside of family” to him. The incredible individuals he interacts with daily make all the difference!
Bryan’s Military Experience
Bryan served in the United States Marine Corps for a total of 8 years. He shared that he didn’t always make the right decisions in his youth but felt compelled to make a change. After considering his options, Bryan felt that the Marines were the best choice to both get back on the right path and experience a change in environment. Bryan joined after his first year of college; throughout his time in the Marine Corps, he was mainly stationed at Camp Pendleton near San Diego, with a short stint overseas. He describes his time there as like a “normal” job, with some sort of physical training every morning.
In reflection of his time in the Marines, Bryan shared that the most significant lesson he took away from his experience was the ability to face challenges head-on. Instead of looking for shortcuts, or a quick “band-aid” solution, the military instilled a problem-solving mindset with the goal of finding long-term solutions. The military also honed Bryan’s communication skills, enabling him to strike a balance between directness and maintaining respect and trust with those he interacts with. He achieves this by being transparent in his conversations while also demonstrating respect through explaining the “why” behind decisions.
As a veteran, Bryan’s perspective sheds light on the complex feelings many veterans often experience. While they don’t actively seek recognition, genuine gratitude and the chance to share their stories are warmly received. Delicacy in approach when expressing interest in learning about a veteran’s experience is essential, as you should always first make sure they are comfortable with sharing. Starting the conversation with a question as simple as, ‘Hey, are you comfortable talking about this?’ or ‘Do you mind if I ask you some questions about your service?’ can go a long way in ensuring that boundaries are respected.
Interestingly, many veterans also hesitate to ask for assistance—whether in transitioning to civilian life or adapting to new roles. Yet, when help is extended, they readily accept it. Bryan, reflecting on his own transition to corporate life, recognizes the value that a veteran mentor would have in guiding him through unfamiliar terrain and the best way to approach different situations.
Bryan is passionate about creating a support system for veterans here at Amergis. Whether through being a direct mentor, creating a safe space to talk, or by just being a pillar of support, he wants veterans within Amergis to know that there is help for whatever challenges they are facing. In recalling a recent conversation with a fellow veteran at Amergis, who had no idea there was a DBO who was also a veteran, Bryan emphasized the importance of community. He shared that: “knowing that there’s people throughout the organization who have been in various shoes and can help speak to what success may look like” is something he wished he knew sooner. He said that any veteran interested in a community call can reach out to him directly and he would be happy to coordinate.
Independence Day Reflections
To Bryan, Independence Day serves as a moment of reflection – a time to contemplate the courage required during the American Revolution. He highlighted this bravery in explaining that: “They had to go create it for themselves and were extremely dependent on one another and their set of beliefs to really stand for something more and accomplish it together. No matter what it took or what it cost, they knew that the path forward was together.” Bryan admires the fortitude that paved the way to our Independence. He also finds it fascinating to delve into the mindset that those in the Revolution held – whether in moments of triumph or defeat – knowing that they remained steadfast together, regardless of the outcome.
Bryan and his family have a unique tradition for Independence Day. Despite him and his siblings now being relatively spread out across the country, all their families migrate to their parent’s house on Lake Texoma for Independence Day. Over the course of a few days, they bask in each other’s company—lounging on the beach, firing up the grill, making new acquaintances in the area, and cherishing the simple joy of togetherness. Bryan aptly describes this time as an opportunity to unplug and reconnect. This cherished annual trip has become a beloved tradition for the entire family, spanning around eight years.
Reflection on the significance of holidays like Independence Day holds great importance to Bryan. It looks different for everyone, but saying a quick ‘thank you’, talking about the origins of Independence Day, or sharing a personal story are all ways to recognize this holiday. In general, taking a moment of reflection to appreciate the sacrifices that it took to create the holiday itself is something Bryan hopes his co-workers at Amergis participate in.
Final Thoughts & Advice
For those who are considering military service, ask questions! Bryan emphasized that joining the military is certainly not a light decision to make. If there is an aspect of military service that you don’t understand, or if you’d like to learn more about certain jobs or benefits, it’s important to seek out unbiased, trusted individuals who can assist in guiding this decision.
For those with loved ones in the military, as mentioned earlier, be respectful in the way you approach them if you are curious to hear about their true experience. Discussing their time in the military privately may be helpful in giving them a space where there is a level of transparency and in which they can answer your questions comfortably.
Thank you, Bryan, for generously sharing your experiences and insights. We deeply appreciate your service to our country and your willingness to provide valuable perspectives as a Marine Corps Veteran. To all our veterans, we honor your sacrifice and dedication, Happy Independence Day!
